DATE: September 26, 2015
TIME: 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

LOCATION: First Congregational Church at 1980 Hamilton Avenue, San Jose

Demonstrator: Cuong Nguyen

Growing up in poverty after the fall of Saigon, Cuong’s greatest pleasure was finding time to draw. His study at the Academy of Art in Saigon was interrupted when the opportunity arose to emigrate to the U.S. in 1991. He earned a degree in illustration from San Jose State University and established a successful career as an icon designer with a prominent Silicon Valley web company.

Cuong soon established a reputation for painting amazingly lifelike portraits on asphalt, and was invited to participate in festivals around the world. More importantly, though, this activity brought him back to painting. Cuong will provide a demonstration in pastel portraits on Saturday, Sepember 26 at our General Meeting. Bring a friend!

Competitions held this month

Submit photos for Autumn Art Project

Twice yearly (February and August) members are invited to submit one or two of their favorite photographs to be voted upon by membership for our Spring and Autumn Group Projects. Out of the plethora of photographs, the two with the most votes are the ones that we, as a group, will use. Participants may interpret these photographs in any medium, on any substrate, and in any form. Participation is not mandatory. Artwork is presented to membership four (4) months later at a General meeting where each artist is asked to explain their approach to the project, the medium used, etc. Two provisos: when submitting photographs, please seriously consider composition; color copies from magazines or other artists’ photographs are not allowed.

Shannon Amidon will be the demonstrator.

Shannon creates mixed media artwork primarily concentrating on the ancient medium of encaustic painting. She incorporates natural, upcycled and repurposed materials, breathing new life into materials that would otherwise be destined for a landfill. Using environmentally safe and sustainable practices is very important to her. In addition to upcycling discarded objects and materials, she also makes her own paints using natural earth pigments and binders.
